Why do do a course and what you can expect to learn from it.

Why do a course?
If you are getting into hill walking, or munro bagging; anything that will take you above the snowline when the weather is cold – then I would recommend that you consider taking a course.
It is easy enough to have an accident on a hill in summer conditions. In winter the hazards increase. Ice, obstacles or holes hidden by snow, higher risk of getting too cold if lost for a long time, poor visibility (although to be fair this is often a risk in Scotland!) and people going out without appropriate kit to deal with these scenarios.
What will you learn?
What to pack and how to use it. You then know that you are prepared should the worst happen, and feel confident that you can get yourself out of any problems that you encounter.
Part of a good course will also teach you what your limits are – ie. are you going to want to learn ice climbing and ropes? or just how to use crampons and navigate in a white out? Once you know this, the skills you learn should enable you to plan a route that is within your capability and comfort zone.
